What it means

Brake discs wear a little every time the pads press on them. This note means the tester saw wear on a disc, such as a lip at the outer edge or a thinner braking surface, that was not serious.

It is an advisory, which does not fail the car by itself. A disc that is significantly and obviously worn is recorded as a major defect, and one that is seriously weakened as a dangerous one.

What to check before you buy

  • Look at the disc through the wheel spokes. A raised lip around the outer edge shows how much has worn away; a rusty band at the edge of the braking surface shows where the pad no longer touches.
  • Ask whether the discs or pads have been changed since the test, and for the invoice.
  • On a test drive, where it is safe and the road behind is clear, brake firmly from speed and feel for pulsing through the pedal.
  • Read the later MOT tests to see whether the note came back.
