What it means

This note means the tester found a cut in a tyre that had not gone deep enough to reach the cords inside it.

It is an advisory, which does not fail the car by itself. A cut that reaches the ply or cords and is larger than the permitted size is recorded as a failure, and a tyre with the cords exposed as a dangerous defect.

What to check before you buy

  • Find the cut. The record often names the position, such as the sidewall. Look at both sides of the tyre and along the tread.
  • Ask whether the tyre has been replaced since the test, and for the invoice.
  • Read the later MOT tests for the same corner. A cut does not repair itself, so it should either be gone with the tyre or may be noted again.
  • Check the tread depth on the same tyre while you are there.
