What it means

This note means the tester saw light damage, surface cracking or ageing in the rubber of a tyre, usually on the sidewall or between the tread blocks, that was not serious enough to fail.

It is an advisory. Damage that exposes the cords, or a bulge or tear in the tyre's structure, is a failure.

What to check before you buy

  • Look closely at both sidewalls of every tyre for fine cracks, including the inner sidewall.
  • Find the four-digit date code on the sidewall. The first two digits are the week and the last two the year the tyre was made.
  • Ask whether the tyres have been replaced since the advisory, and for the invoice.
  • Check the later MOT tests for the same note on the same corner.
