What it means

The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way round the tyre. This note means the tester measured a tyre that was still legal but close to that limit, or worn more heavily along one edge.

It is an advisory, which does not fail the car by itself. Once the tread falls below 1.6 mm the same tyre is recorded as a failure.

What to check before you buy

  • Measure the tread on all four tyres, including the inner edges that are hard to see from outside the car.
  • Ask for the invoice if the seller says the tyres were replaced after the advisory, and check the date against the test.
  • Read the car's later MOT tests to see whether the note came back or became a tread-depth failure.
  • Compare wear across each tyre. Heavier wear on one edge is worth raising with the seller.
